Recently, I found myself needing to do some web work and purchased Dreamweaver CS5. I also figured I had a lot to learn and re-learn so I purchased a few tutorials. The first one I started was this one, The Missing Manual. It started off very well. The author obviously knows his subject well and has to ability to communicate it. I worked through the tutorials in the early chapters and felt I was genuinely learning to use this powerful application.
As time went one, however, I felt I was actually learning less and less. The problem, for me, was one of style and method. With technical matters, I learn best by doing. I want the explanation and I want the background but I want them as I progress through actually doing something.
As concepts were explained, exercises were presented that made them real. That changed. The further I advanced into the text, the more I found chapters that did nothing but explain. Many chapters have no exercises at all. I felt as if I were drinking the knowledge into my head only to have it leak out again from lack of use.
That was frustrating, to say the least. Another problem I had was with the ordering of the material. Some fairly advanced concepts were introduced too early while the simpler ones had to wait for a later chapter. I would have like to have worked through a series of exercises, each building on previous material, that made me more intimately familiar with the capabilities of the program and competent to use those capabilities.
Instead, I found plenty of information, somewhat disjointed and a dearth of actual exercises to actually experience those capabilities. I will hold onto this book. I think it will make a good reference. I need another tutorial, though, to actually learn the program. I checked out a lot of different options when it came to learning how to use Dreamweaver CS5.
This was the first time I'd used a TMM product and I found it extremely user friendly, well organized and structured, and the tutorials included practical and easy to use and reuse examples as a way to get comfortable with what Dreamweaver is capable of. I hadn't used DW for over a decade so while a few things were still familiar from that far back, much of it was not and the TMM assumed nothing and was perfect as a step-by-step guide on learning the ins and outs of this latest version of Dreamweaver.
After spending two weeks reading and working through the tutorials, I was able to completely rebuild my own website using CSS something I had never worked with before and HTML along with advanced Java Spry features without any issues. Well worth the money and the time it takes to read and work through it.
The Advanced sections provide insight into PHP and dynamic data-base driven websites as well and that provided enough of a touchstone for me to identify what additional information I needed to research and investigate to take advantage of those features and capability as well.
I find this book easy to read with lots of examples and pictures to go along with the text. There are also tutorials built into each chapter which give you a chance to try out what you've been reading about. The writing is entertaining and not dry to read. I have an older version of Dreamweaver so am not new to the program but wasn't really using it much so pretty much needed to start from scratch.
I am also not a professional programmer but do web design for my church so am not a total novice. I would highly recommend this book. This is supposed to be a reference book, which means you should be able to find what you want quickly.
The contents page provided is lousy, to say the least. Just the sections are given with the chapters, and not a single chapter states what it is about, only that it is Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and so on. You have to go into each chapter to find out what it is about. It is indeed a "Missing Manual". For USD25 I expected much more. Sorry I bought this book.
Maybe some people can use this book to learn how to use dreamweaver, but I sure couldn't. This Dreamweaver CS5. All Missing Manuals are excellent learning resources, and this title is no exception By using the book in conjunction with the example files, which you can download for free if you didn't buy the CD included title, you will be taken from raw beginner by carefully graded steps to an advanced user.
I find a physical book much better than an ebook for learning. The Adobe tutorials on You Tube are very good, however I like the convenience of being able to refer back to a previous sentence, paragraph, page, chapter or topic to refresh my memory. This is much easier with a book. This book is all you need to become an advanced Dreamweaver user, and I highly recommend it. If you are studying for Adobe Certification you might also find Adobe's Classroom in a Book helpful in addition to the Missing Manual , which is more focused on the requirements of the Adobe examination.
This book is a constant reference for me and I use Dreamweaver every day. Adobe should include this with their product considering what you have to pay for their software. If you have never used Dreamweaver this book will have you up and running in short order, if like me you use Dreamweaver every day you will still refer back to it constantly..

One thing is that the instructions and the comments here are arranged as they should be, easy and intuitive to follow. And they seem to cover most of DW's enormous capabilities. The DW CIB is just the opposite, you have to ween out next step buried in a confusing text and missing information.
I had been using Dreamweaver MX for a number of years and had picked up a reasonable working knowledge of the product. The considerable changes to the way Dreamweaver uses CSS left me completely bamboozled and I had a number of sites that I was struggling to maintain with the new software - mainly because of my lack of website structure and the enhancements to web design that CS5.
This book is great. It has transformed my website writing from enthusiastic hacker to pretty much a competent coder. I now love cs5.
One person found this helpful. Dreamweaver is a huge programme, but unlocking its power can be daunting. This manual is equally huge, and I've had no chance to do more than dip into it so far, but from that experience I can see that it will be an essential guide to improving my skills at building websites. I only wish I'd bought it originally, rather than messing about for months with one or two other lesser guides. I've been using Dreamweaver in its various guises for years and am pretty much self taught.
